European Green Belt Days 2024 – Ceration of Green Belt Park“
In partnership with PUC Standard and Elementary School “Dubrava” Knjaževac – Subsidiary School Kalna, TEAM established a Green Belt Park in the village of Kalna, Serbia, at the entrance to Stara Planina National Park. The project promotes the European Green Belt (EGB) initiative by enhancing environmental awareness and encouraging cross-sector cooperation. Located at a key crossroads used by locals and tourists, the park features 24 planted trees, symbolizing the 24 countries along the Green Belt. Equipped with picnic tables and waste bins, the space serves as a welcoming, educational spot and is regularly maintained by PUC Standard.
A Park with a Purpose
Strategically located at the entrance to Stara Planina National Park. With this in mind, a previously underutilized public space at the village’s main crossroads—frequented daily by locals and tourists heading to the nearby ski center—was transformed into a welcoming Green Belt Park.
This park now features 24 newly planted trees, symbolizing the 24 countries united under the European Green Belt initiative. Also, Park have Picnic table and waste bins, maintained by PUC Standard, promoting responsible tourism and public engagement.
The park is envisioned as a recreational and educational area where visitors can relax and learn about the importance of biodiversity, sustainable development, and cross-border environmental cooperation.
The opening of the park was celebrated within the Green Belt Day week with the participation of local youth and residents from the Stara Planina area, representatives of local self-government, representatives from local NGOs and public bodies responsible for protected area management as well as tourists.
This inclusive event underscored the importance of cooperation across sectors and borders in protecting Europe’s natural heritage.
The Green Belt Park in Kalna is more than a recreational area—it is a symbol of international solidarity in environmental protection. It stands as a vibrant, living reminder of the need for collective action to safeguard the ecosystems that connect Europe from north to south.
