The European Green Belt spans over 12,500 kilometres along the former Iron Curtain, stretching from the Barents Sea in the north to the Black and Adriatic Seas in the south. This unique ecological network connects diverse landscapes across 24 countries, forming a “green backbone” of Europe and standing as a living memorial to a once-divided continent. It links valuable natural and cultural sites while supporting the social and economic needs of local communities.

Established in 2015, the European Green Belt Association coordinates conservation activities throughout this vast region. With 35 members from 17 countries, the Association promotes cross-border cooperation, knowledge exchange, and policy advocacy aimed at protecting and restoring Europe’s shared natural heritage.
